Reflections on the Relationship Between Jazz and Classical Music

(This is a copy of a term paper I wrote this fall...) Topic: The influence of classical music and early African American folk music on the development of jazz in the 1950s and 1960s. Two jazz genres third stream jazz and hard bop grew simultaneously in opposite directions during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The post-bebop jazz style called symphonic jazz or alternately Third Stream jazz is an example of acculturation, significantly influenced by classical music. Conversely, a new subgenre of bebop called hard bop used the more traditional folk elements of gospel and blues music. Each of these genres was of tremendous importance to the development of jazz. In the late 1950s and early 1960s bebop evolved in two main directions, with many subgenres.  read more »

SLEEPY JOHN ESTES: Legendary Country Blues Artists (JSP - 7779 - 4CDs)

Stripped of individual expression, the blues is music without artifice, a combination of vocal and instrumental elements each refined to their absolute essence. The greatest blues singers of any generation are those who instinctively cleave to these principals. Part of the reason for their presence on any subjectively-compiled list is the clarity of their singing, the precision of their instrumental ability and the universality of their themes and performance. But there's one exception: 'SLEEPY' JOHN ESTES. With the most basic of guitar techniques and the densest of rural accents, he confounds every yardstick of definition and yet triumphs over what in other artists would be considered deficiencies. The world evoked in his often autobiographical songs is a unique as their composer. One of sixteen children, John Adam Estes was born on a sharecropping plot outside Ripley in Lauderdale County, Tennessee on January 25, 1904. He was eleven when the family moved to Brownsville and was already picking his way around his father's guitar. It was around this time he was struck in the eye by a stone during a game of baseball, an injury that eventually rendered him part-blind. That may in turn have hindered his attendance at a school in Winfield Lane, where in the fields with his siblings and pursued his interest in music. This latter increased after his father died around 1920.

T-BONE WALKER: Goodbye Blues (4 Disc Set)

If you're wondering where it all began for electric blues guitar, there's not much of a need to look beyond Aaron Thibeaux Walker. Born in Linden, TX, and better known as T-Bone, a corruption of his middle name, this was the man who took blues guitar to heights never previously imagined by plugging into an amplifier and letting his fingers do the talking.  read more »

JSP BOX SET: The Original SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON (4CDs)

Easily the most important harmonica player of the pre-war era, John Lee Williamson almost single-handedly made the humble mouth organ a worthy lead instrument for blues bands -- leading the way for the amazing innovations of Little Walter and a platoon of others to follow. If not for his tragic murder in 1948 while on his way home from a Chicago gin mill, Williamson would doubtless have been right there alongside them, exploring new and exciting directions.

LONNIE JOHNSON: The Original Guitar Wizard (Proper Box Set)

Althought Lonnie Johnson ranks as one of the most influential and original blues musicians, he cannot be categorized purely as a bluesman. Johnson's talent was broader, he held his own in the most challenging jazz company, while he could deliver a pop ballad or standard with feeling and technique. Lonnie Johnson was the instrumental link between blues and early forms of jazz. While he possessed the technique and musical knowledge to expand and elaborate upon the traditional blues harmonies and melodies, the dextrous and versatile Johnson was equally valuable to both genres.
