I'm off to upstate New York this weekend, for two great days of music at the Freihofer's Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is a gorgeous place to see a concert, and there is a top-notch list of acts. As always, there will be two stages, ensuring there will be non-stop Jazz and R&B. The lineup is as follows: SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 2008 Amphitheatre Jonathan Batiste Trio featuring 19-year old jazz pianist, composer and Julliard student Jonathan Batiste. read more »

I was born in raised in the Nutmeg state, Connecticut, where the all-to-brief summer has always been chock full of free outdoor music, especially jazz festivals, to enjoy. Podcast 119 is a salute to those festivals, and feature artists who appeared or will appear at the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, and the New Haven Jazz Festival, two free festivals in two of the state's largest cities. Set in beautiful Bushnell Park and the historic New Haven Green, these are perfect places to throw down a blanket and spend a great evening listening to memorable music. The New Haven Festival will run from August 9-11. read more »

I'll be marrying my dear Nancy this Sunday in a small ceremony held with family and friends in Forest Park, Springfield, Massachusetts. My son Matt will be my best man, and Nancy's two sisters and two oldest friends will make up the bridal party. Then we're off for an Italian honeymoon , so it will be a few weeks before I blog again.
Since I can't invite you all to be guests at the reception, I thought the next best things would be to prepare Podcast 113 as a collection of songs that will be played during the ceremony and party. My brother David is in charge of making sure the music flows smoothly. read more »

On Heard That, his Peak Records debut, Lorber keeps the soulful momentum going, collaborating brilliantly on pop, jazz, R&B and blues-influenced tracks--and even harkening back a bit to his early 80s Fusion heyday--with one of urban jazzs top hit makers and sonic architects, Rex Rideout. Over three decades after breaking ground as leader of the pioneering Jeff Lorber Fusion, the Philly-born and bred composer, producer and keyboard legend is still keeping the vibes fresh and the grooves funky. Highlighted by the first single, a swinging, bluesy-brass twist on Amy Winehouses Grammy winning Rehab, Heard That features a typically vibrant Lorber all-star guest list, including trumpet great Rick Braun, guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr., saxman Gary Meek, bassist Alex Al, trumpeter Ron King, guitarist Darrell Crooks and Peak labelmates, saxman Gerald Albright. Lorber has been touring all throughout 2008 as part of Guitars & Saxes with Albright, Peak labelmate Jessy J, Jeff Golub and Peter White. As high charting, pop-jazz oriented releases like West Side Stories (1994), State of Grace (1996) and Midnight (1998) were establishing him as one of the genres top artists, Lorber also became an in demand producer. Every artist looking for a hit melody and groove, from Albright to Eric Marienthal, Richard Elliot and David Benoit, tapped his behind the board talents. read more »

Several of my female colleagues -- who I believe have only a casual interest in jazz -- have expressed interest in attending a Chris Botti show with the NAC Orchestra either tonight or Saturday. One said words to the effect that he plays well, and his...(read more)
